By law, Tulane University is required to keep judicial records for 7 years, after which files are shredded. Suspensions and expulsions are kept indefinitely.

Disciplinary probation is a notation on a student's academic transcript for the period of time of the probationary period. Suspension and expulsion are permanent notations on a student's academic transcript.

Internship sites, future employers, and graduate schools often times ask the University to provide information about a student's judicial record before making a hiring or admissions decision. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) allows Tulane University to share this information with potential employers and graduate schools. The kind of information requested varies from a detailed account of behavioral history to whether or not a student is currently in good academic standing (i.e., not on disciplinary probation).

Students have the right to access their judicial files and to dispute the accuracy of the information contained therein. Request to review files can be made at 104 Central Building or by calling 865-5180. Judicial files cannot leave the office nor can copies of information be made.
